MINING INDUSTRY

The Dominican Republic possesses abundant and diverse mineral deposits, including the second-largest gold deposit in the Americas. It also has significant reserves of silver, nickel, bauxite, marble, limestone, and granite. Additionally, the country is known for the extraction of amber and larimar, which are semi-precious stones used in jewelry design.

Some of the provinces with important mineral deposits include Pedernales, which has bauxite, sodium carbonate, and limestone; Barahona, known for salt, gypsum, and larimar; Azua, with gypsum, marble, calcium carbonate, and limestone; Samaná, with marble and granite; Puerto Plata, known for amber; and Dajabón, which has limestone and granite. Furthermore, the Dominican Republic is open to new investments in the search for natural gas and oil.

BARRICK GOLD

Barrick Pueblo Viejo is located in the Sánchez Ramírez province, 100 kilometers from Santo Domingo. From the start of its commercial operations until January 2017, Barrick Pueblo Viejo had achieved a production of approximately 4,179,417 ounces of gold and 12,334,405 ounces of silver.

With an estimated lifespan of 25 years, it is one of the most important mines in the country and the world. The total capital investment has reached around US$4.5 billion, making it the largest foreign investment in the history of the country. Additionally, the mine made purchases totaling over US$1.907 billion (RD$83.944 billion) from 2008 to 2014.

FALCONDO

Falconbridge Dominicana (Falcondo) is a ferronickel mining operation with operations in Monseñor Nouel and La Vega. It is owned by Americano Nickel Limited, a private capital company.

Ferronickel is a combination of iron and nickel, used by the stainless steel industry.

Falcondo has advanced technology that allows for efficient production. Its facilities include open-pit mines, a mineral preparation plant, a power plant, reduction furnaces, electric smelting furnaces, and metal refining facilities.
